Privacy Policy

need2.chat is a private messaging app for staying in touch with friends. Privacy is the whole point of the product, so we collect as little as possible and design the app so that we cannot read your conversations.

What we collect

To run your account and deliver messages, we collect a small amount of information:

• Account details — the email address you sign up with, and the display name and username you choose. If you sign in with Apple, we receive the identifier Apple provides (and an email, which may be Apple's private relay address).
• An account identifier (user ID) — a random ID that represents your account and links your devices together.
• Encrypted message data — the encrypted contents of your messages and any attachments, plus the minimal routing information (who a message is for, and when it was sent and delivered) needed to deliver it. We cannot decrypt the contents.
• Public keys for each of your devices, so friends can encrypt messages that only your devices can open.

What we do not do

• We do not read your messages — they are end-to-end encrypted and we do not have the keys.
• We do not track you across other apps or websites.
• We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
• We do not show ads, and we do not use your data for advertising.
• We do not collect your contacts, location, or advertising identifiers.

How your information is used

The information above is used only to provide the app's core functionality: creating and securing your account, connecting you with friends, and delivering messages between your devices. We use your email address for account sign-in, verification, and account-related notices such as password resets.

Optional features that use your data

Auto-translation

If you turn on auto-translation (it can be enabled or disabled per chat and globally in Settings), the app decrypts an incoming message on your device and sends that text to Google's public translation endpoint to return a translation. When this feature is off, no message text leaves your device in readable form. You can disable translation at any time in Settings.

Notifications

If you enable notifications, we send a push notification when you receive a message. These push alerts are content-free — they do not include the message text. Push delivery is handled by Apple (APNs) on iOS and by your browser's push service on the web.

Service providers

We rely on a few trusted providers to operate the app. They process only what is needed to provide their service, and they never receive the keys to your messages:

• Supabase — database, authentication, realtime delivery, and encrypted media storage.
• Netlify — hosting for the web app and notification functions.
• Apple — Sign in with Apple (if you use it) and push notifications on iOS.
• Google — translation of message text, only when you have auto-translation enabled.

Data retention & deletion

Your account information and encrypted messages are kept while your account is active. You can delete your messages within the app. To delete your account and associated data, contact us at the email below and we will remove your account. Once your account is deleted, the associated encrypted data is removed and, because we never held the keys, any residual ciphertext is permanently unreadable.

Children

need2.chat is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Your choices

You can update your profile, turn translation and notifications on or off, and delete messages at any time in the app. You can request access to or deletion of your account data by contacting us.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
